Individuals take control of their smart thermostat from their wrist so occasionally that Google has decided to altogether discontinue its Nest app for Apple Watch as well as the corporate’s Wear OS platform. The smartwatch Nest app provided a fast way to modify the thermostat’s target temperature or working mode. However, now it merely shows a “Nest is no longer supported on Wear OS” message when opened and instructs prospects to uninstall it.
“We took a look at Nest app customers on smartwatches and discovered that only a small number of folks were utilizing it,” a Google spokesperson said. “Moving ahead, our group will spend more time specializing in delivering high-quality experiences via phone apps and voice interactions.”
This is not a monumental loss. Users can still pull out their cellphone and do those same things (and more) with the Nest mobile app on Android and iOS. Notifications from the Nest smartphone app will keep showing up on their watch. Plus, anyone with a Wear OS watch can use Google Assistant to monitor Nest gadgets with their voice. Apple Watch owners yet don’t have that fallback.
So even Google has ended one of its Wear OS apps — one that was a superb example of a smartwatch’s convenience — isn’t definitely worth the effort any longer. It’s putting even much less effort into supporting the Apple Watch, with 9to5Google noting that Google Keep is the corporate’s last remaining watchOS app.
